Them dang knots!!

We all have the problem but we keep on rocking that good ole wash n’ go or fro. I mean I can’t give that up it’s just so fly to rock those curls all big; then comes those dang single strand knots. I admit I sometimes consciously and unconsciously just snag them right away, even though I am probably damaging my hair 10x worst but its such a bad habit. I’m working on it though.

I think the biggest thing that contributes to single strand knots is our tendency to suffer from “hand in hair” syndrome. We all love our little coils, curls, kinks and can never get enough. I fall victim to it every time. I was super excited when I recently came across this video and had to share it with you all. YES!!!

Tressumé: Ashley

Name: Ashley C

20121209-003029.jpg

Location: Nashville, Tn

Originally from Memphis, Tn. Ashley is currently a grad student at Belmont University where she majors in Classical Performance and Pedagogy and also a Tennessee State University Alum in Nashville. She is a musician, educator, and obsessed with natural hair lol. You can find her on Instagram: Mochacurlie89 where she shares her regimen, natural hair tips, hairstyles, and other fun randoms.

How long have you been natural? 2 years and 11 months strong

Did you transition or do the Big Chop? I cut it all off baby!!! LOL

Why did you choose that route? My big chop story is crazy actually lol. I initially began transitioning with the 20121209-003032.jpgmethod of “growing an inch, cutting an inch” in mind. I was 3 months strong in my transition when I woke up one morning and tried to comb my hair. That comb broke in my head and I literally snapped! I was so over it that I was going to cut my hair myself, but my boyfriend stopped me and took me to a barber lol. I got it all chopped off and never looked back.

How long did you transition? 3 months

What inspired you to have natural hair?A perm gone wrong was my inspiration. A beautician gave me a perm and left it in too long, so I was left with a massive chemical burn that took up most of my crown area. My hair suffered massive breakage and an ugly scab to go with it. After that ordeal, I just couldn’t see myself damaging my hair any further with chemicals. So I decided to embrace my natural hair.

What has kept you motivated to remain natural? Throughout my journey, I’ve surrounded myself with people who embrace my natural hair, made curlfriends, watch other naturalistas hair journeys on YouTube, and experimented with different products and regimens that keep my hair journey exciting.

What are two(2) natural hair products that you just can’t live without? Why? 1) Shea Moisture’s Curl Milk-20121209-003036.jpgthis stuff moisturizes my hair beyond belief! I use it as a leave in and styler, so it’s like a 2 in 1product for me. 2) MyHoneyChild Honey Hair Mask-this deep conditioner is thee business! It moisturizes, detangles, and gives my hair sooo much shine.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair? In the warmer months, I enjoy wash n gos, for the colder months mostly twistouts and braidouts.

What do you love about your natural hair? It is so versatile and best of all, it’s mine!

What do you dislike about it? It takes forever to air dry, but I’ve learn to deal with it *side eye* lol

What tip(s) would you recommend to someone who wants to become natural, is transitioning, or needs advice about natural hair? Do your research and find what works for your hair. No one knows your hair better than you. Everyone goes through “Trial and Error” when trying to find products and regimens that’ll suit your hair’s needs. Utilize resources like google (my best friend lol), YouTube, and books to learn more about what could work for you. Also, never let anyone tell you our hair is “bad” or it doesn’t grow! Natural 20121209-003025.jpghair is beautiful, unique, and it grows to amazing lengths when properly cared for with a little bit of patience 😉 Embrace your natural self and love those curly tresses!

Don’t you just love Ashley’s curls? I know I do, I am going to have to use some of her tips.

Kinky Curly Wash ‘n Go

Today’s products….

20120531-190713.jpg

If you have read my Curl Daze post, you know that I won the whole Kinky Curly product kit. So today I decided to try some of the products out. I chose the above Knot Today Detangler/Leave In and the Curling Custard.

To prep my hair I applied some water, Vatika Oil and the Wen Intensive Hair Treatment. After applying I twisted my hair adding some of my castor oil mixture. I then covered my hair with a shower cap and my satin bonnet leaving it overnight.

This morning I washed the contents of the Wen Intensive Hair Treatment out of my hair with the twists still in. The Kinky Curly Knot Today was applied twice, then I untwisted my hair and rinsed.

Once out of the shower I applied more Knot Today and combed through my hair in sections using the Curling Custard. I then ended with the results below…

How I felt about the results….the Knot today left my hair feeling clean and very moisturized, though it did leave my hair feeling a bit striped. The Curling Custard did define my hair and left my hair smelling like candy which I liked. The down side was it made my hair feel like I had candy in it, that was not fun at all.

I would definitely try the products again using less of the Curling Custard. I really feel I have not mastered my measuring skills when defining my curls with Gel like products. Better luck next time.
