Have to teach the youngings

For the Thanksgiving holiday I spent time with family in a beautiful cabin somewhere in New Jersey and when I say it was one of the best experiences, I mean it. It felt so good to be so close to home but so far at the same time. It was the perfect place to relax and the cabin was just beautiful. While on the little getaway,  I had to do some schooling!  The background info: My younger cousin D is 13 years old and she is pretty much at the stage where she has to deal with her hair on her own, and she has no idea how she is supposed to be taking care of her hair. Prior to this I had told her what to do and it oviously went in one ear and out the next. This was her hair when I recently saw her…

It was all knotted together into one big dread. The girls hair was locking y’all, and I was in awe. She is a swimmer; she swims almost 6 days a week, usually just brushing the hair up into a ponytail without detangling or combing it out. Thank goodness we got to the root of the issue. After encountering her newly dreaded hair, I knew I had to get to schooling..well unless she wanted dreads, but that wasn’t the case. So to get the locked hair detangled I wet it a bit and added some Shea Moisture’s Anti- Breakage Masque and basically combed out whenever and where ever I could. Once that was all done, I used the Shea Moisture’s Yucca and Baobab Thickening shampoo and the Restorative conditioner to detangle her hair. It did take some time but we got through the agony (she is super tender headed). I told her how she should be sectioning her hair and getting the product through her hair evenly, leaving her to try it out on her own for one of the sections that had to be detangled.

After washing, conditioning and detangling, we applied some of the Yucca and Baobab hair milk, and a bit of vatika oil to the hair and voila……..

Henna Love

I recently spoke about how I was dying to henna my hair and how the wonderful Myleik blessed me in my October CurlBox. The henna many naturals received in their Curlbox was Reshma Femme; most received a Chocolate or Natural Highlights color. I received the natural highlights, and yes I was super excited. I have never had any type of color in my hair before, so this did it for me.

In the box, we got a 2 .oz bag of henna powder, a conditioning oil and a pair of gloves.

I added a picture of the contents of the package in its dry state for those of you who may be new to the whole henna game. It was of a green, powder like texture.

I added about two an one-fourth cups of water along with the conditioning oil provided and proceeded to mix. I remember hearing many naturals suggest using a plastic mixer(metal is said to alter the mixture), so I resorted to a good ole plastic fork.

The consistency of the powder with added ingredients; thick paste. I let it sit for two and a half hours as suggested on the box.

Here are some picture of my hair before the application….

Once I finger detangled, I then applied my Jamaican black castor oil to the base of my hair as a protectant from any color runs.

I then wrapped my hair with plastic wrap and covered over with a plastic bag(I couldn’t find a plastic cap. LOL no judging  people). I then left the henna on my hair for close to 3 hours.

Here are pictures of my hair with the henna applied to it. I was thinking it would dry up like body henna but it was actually the opposite.

I then got into the shower and rinsed the henna out, which was extremely messy. I couldn’t stand how much it was flashing all over the place. I was scared it would stain the shower, luckily it just washed right off. Below I included pictures of my hair right after rinsing the henna out. It looked and felt extra moisturized and conditioned. Win for me!!

Once the henna was all rinsed out I applied my Shea Moisture’s  restorative shampoo. Then I conditioned with my Giovanni’s Smooth as Silk  & Tea Tree conditioner(I needed that extra condition and tingle for my scalp). Once that was done, I used my Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave-in, and applied my Castor x Vatika x Peppermint oil mix to seal.

Here are the finished results of my henna’d hair. My hair felt very moisturized, and conditioned. I was a little disappointed my hair wasn’t as colored as I had anticipated it to be, though I enjoyed the small tint of reddish brown. My curls are a poppin’.

Thanks to Myleik, the CurlBox Crew, and Reshma Femme for the amazing experience.

Protein…Happy Hair

As I mentioned in my unhappy hair post, my hair was extremely dry and just wasn’t acting right. After stalking all the natural hair vloggers for sometime now I decided to actually take some of there tips. I figured it was time to treat my hair with a little protein. After all she deserved it.

I started by trimming my ends, followed by my shampoo. Yes, Shea Moisture.

Freshly washed hair, looking not so bad after the trim.

The protein treatment I used was by the beautiful, talented and super amazing Whitney also known as Naptural85. It consisted of eggs, mayo, and honey. You can check it out below.

My hair soaked in the mixture. It got really messy; I had to cover my hair with my shower cap and a towel to prevent dripping.

I left it on for 45 minutes, rinsed with cool water and followed with my conditioner, then finger detangled.

These are the result of my protein filled hair post wash. My curlies sprouting so beautiful. My hair is HAPPY.20120822-153040.jpg

Following the rinse, I applied my Curl and Style milk (moisturizer) and my Vatika Oil (sealer).

Yummy!! My Curls are back!!

Stretch Fro

I recently decided to get a protective style and thought it would be super to stretch my hair. Now that is worked fine for me I can share it with you all.
I co washed my hair using my Shea Moisture products also applying my Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave-in; you all know I couldn’t forget to seal up my ends by applying my Vatika oil. After all of that was said and done I twisted my hair into a couple chunky sections.

20120801-231402.jpg

20120801-231409.jpg

I then sat under my satin bonnet dryer for 45 mins. Once it was dry I removed the twists and combed out my hair using a wide tooth comb, to stretch my hair. These were my results.

20120801-231503.jpg

I couldn’t help but throw up my black power sign while I was at it. Doesn’t it look lovely!! I must say after only 4 months post BC my hair has grown lots. I love it!!

Hope you like, and be sure to tell me how your stretching goes… Lastly,I would like to credit Karen of KBB for this method of stretching as mentioned in her interview with Matermea.

Brooklyn kind of Wash and Go

It was definitely feeling like a Brooklyn kind of day when I pulled out my stash to wash and define my TWA. Being that I attended the CurlBox x Karen’s Body Beautiful event I was sure to leave with some goodies. I received a Luscious Locks Hair Mask & Hold It Gel w/Argan Oil; I finally put them to the test.

For this particular wash I incorporated a couple of my other staples to get the job done.

My Vatika Oil and Shea Moisture Restorative conditioner

Check out how I put all of these products to the test…..

The results were not too bad. After applying the KBB Luscious Locks Hair Mask my hair resembled Jerry curls from all the moisture is retained. I still don’t feel I have mastered the application of gel as yet but once I do you will be the first to hear.
