How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for about 11 years, but I started the process 12 years ago. I caved in during the first year and put a kiddie perm in my hair. Afterwards I was so mad with myself for allowing my fundamental darkness win.

Did you transition or do the Big Chop? I transitioned, I cut the perm off bit by bit once I saw that my hair was growing.

Why did you choose that route?
I always had long hair, and I didn’t want to cut it all off just to go natural. Everyone told me that I would have to cut it all off in order to get my curls back. I used that negativity as my fuel, and to prove them wrong.

How long did you transition? Gee it took a while I want to say a couple of years, but I don’t remember exactly, it was so long ago. I wore my hair in protective styles, which helped my hair grow, and before I would take them out I would cut some more of my processed ends off. I was so happy when I was able to cut off the last piece of straight hair off! By that time my hair was naturally past my shoulders, and I think that is why it took so long. I didn’t want my hair to be short.

What inspired you to have natural hair?
I remember one day I was going through my photo album and I saw all these pics of me when I was younger with beautiful curls. At that point I had been relaxing my hair for about 10 years. Can you believe I didn’t even remember what it was like to have curly hair, something deep inside me missed having curls. As I reflected I was heart broken that I had asked my mom to put a perm in my hair. I can’t say that she never warned me! When I was a teen I hated my hair, for years I would just wear it in a bun, and damaged it by coloring it all the time. I was trying to keep up with the Joneses and I couldn’t take it any more, I just wanted to be free to express myself. Everyone opposed me becoming natural; my boyfriend even broke up with me! I guess was to forward thinking chuckle. Deep in my soul I knew I was doing the right thing. 11 years later I am so happy to see women take the steps to embrace the hair that they were blessed with.

What has kept you motivated to remain natural?
When I started to transition, the pictures of me when I was younger were my inspiration, and also hearing my mom say “You use to have such nice soft curls.” If I had depended on anything else I would of caved in and gone back down chemical road. None of my peers were attempting to grow out their hair, and as my mane grew people just looked at me crazy!
Now, being natural is more that just my hair, it is a lifestyle. I’ve become more aware of the causes I make to maintain a natural lifestyle and I am still learning what that mean for me and my family. I’m so inspired by all these lovely ladies that have blog, vlog, with information about health and hair, there is such an amazing community of support! We just need to continue to unite!

What are two(2) natural hair products that you just can’t live without? Why? I looooove coconut oil and Shea butter. I always make sure I have these two items in stock. They both keep my hair very soft. I use them, along with my gel, for styling and as my everyday moisturizer. I recently started using Karen’s Body beautiful. Her line is amazing and she has created so many aids for the hair, she is really into educating woman about proper hair care.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair? I LIVE in the double strand twist. I feel like this style helps my hair to grow. Depending on my mood I make then really small, or fairly big. I usually braid the root, then I twist the ends, that way the root is a little bit tighter. I can go almost a month in this style, because I can manipulate it into many other styles

What do you love about your natural hair? I love how versatile my hair is! I can wear it straight, up do’s tight curls, braids, afro depending on my mood or season. When it was relaxed I couldn’t create as many styles. I also love that my hair is always evolving so I am constantly learning more about it as the years go by.

What do you dislike about it?
Ummmm….. what is there to dislike. I feel blessed, even if it may take me longer to do my hair than most, or I even though I get very hot when it’s in a fro. I love my hair, and wouldn’t change it for the world!!

What tip(s) would you recommend to someone who wants to become natural, is transitioning, or needs advice about natural hair? You must first love and respect your hair (and self), before anyone else can. Have confidence that your hair will grow to you determined length, it will get there before you know it!! Be conscious of the products that you use on your mane, just because it says organic, doesn’t mean it really is. Experiment! There are so many resources out on the web that provide recipes for natural hair products, use ‘em. It’s all about trial and error, because your texture may be different than the next woman, not everything will work for you but you wont find out unless you try. You don’t need to do a big chop n order to become natural; as your hair grows you curl pattern will evolve. Enjoy the process it, you may discover something else about yourself!

Unhappy Hair

After coming back from Belize and trying to sun kiss my hair, my hair was so unhappy. She wasn’t bouncy any more, she had no definition, neither was she responding to anything I applied.

So I decided to do another ACV Rinse to restore my hair’s moisture and make her happy again!! You can check out how I do my vinegar rinse in my DC Chillin’ post.

20120822-141724.jpg

She was happier and much more bouncier. 🙂 Yeahhh!! After rinsing out my hair with cool water I applied some Shea Butter to seal in the moisture.

Straight from the motherland!! Ghana

Sealing Moisture into Your Hair

I did some research on the proper way natural hair should be moisturized and put it to the test. My hair felt soft and super moisturized. Check out the post I found by Nikisha of Urban Bush Babes.

Hi ladies, I wanted to give a quick run through for those who don’t know how to seal their hair, because there is a right way and a wrong way.

Step 1.While hair is freshly cleansed and still wet apply a leave-in conditioner and/or moisturizing cream. Make sure that the leave-in conditioner and moisturizing cream have “water” as an ingredient. The water helps with hairs moisture.

Step 2. Last step apply a coat of oils or butters to your ends and all over your hair if you prefer. This will help seal in the moisture from the leave-in creams and conditioners. This aids in length retention because moisturized hair prevents breakage.

***If you don’t apply your oils or butters as your last step then you will block out the moisture from the leave-in cream and conditioner. Just think about putting a coat of oil on your strands and then trying to put a cream on top, it won’t penetrate. So make sure to follow these steps in exact order . Cream and/or leave-in conditioner first and oils or butters last . Stay away from creams and oils that contain mineral oil and petroleum.

Tressumé: Anita

Name: Anita

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

I found this young lady on Instagram and she has been a fellow Instagrammer for quite some time. Time and time again I see her post pictures of her amazing transition. If I were a longer term transitioner I’d definitely have to go to her for tips. All of her transition styles come out super! Check out her Tressumé.

How long have you been natural?
I am not fully natural at this time.

Did you transition or do the Big Chop?
I am a transitioner.
Why did you choose that route?
I chose to transition for two reason… I believe I do not look good with short hair. Had it once (not on purpose…scissor happy stylist) and vowed never again.  Second reason, my husband had one request as he got used to my new hair.  Do not cut off all of your hair, is what he requested. How long have you been transitioning?I have been transitioning now for 12 months (August 2011 last relaxer).  I plan to transition anywhere between 18 months and 24 months.

What inspired you to have natural hair?
I have had a relaxer in my hair since I was 6 years old.  My mom doesn’t need a relaxer and did not know what to do with all of this thick kinky hair.  I have never seen my natural hair and became curious after seeing so many beautiful naturals.  Even though my relaxed hair grew long it always seemed to stop growing at a certain point and I experienced thinning at the temples.  I also have a very sensitive scalp and the relaxer gave me severe burns and I couldn’t take it anymore.

What has kept you motivated to remain natural?
As my new curls started coming in at first I began feeling like I needed to do something with this thick hair, but after learning so much about how to take care of it and what products to use it became something I began to get excited about.  The longer it got the more I wanted to try new transitioning styles to see what I could do with it next.  I can’t keep one style in (braids) too long because I begin to miss my curls.

What are two(2) natural hair products that you just can’t live without? Why?
This is really hard to come up with only two because I have become a product junkie.  If I had to go with any two, it would be Shea butter mixture (Shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, & vitamin E oil) and Kinky Curly Knot Today.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?
My favorite hair style is two strand twist out with perm rods on the relaxed ends.  This style is great to work out with and if when it gets old it’s great to pull up into a curly puff.  It really blends the two textures.
What do you love about your natural hair?Since I am not fully natural, I have to say I love the thickness of my hair and my curls.  I love when it’s wet and just fingering through to look at how I have different textures throughout.

What do you dislike about it?
Currently, I can’t say I dislike anything about it.  I can say however, I dislike the relaxed ends that I just can’t part with at the moment.

What tip(s) would you recommend to someone who wants to become natural, is transitioning, or needs advice about natural hair?
Patience, patience, patience.  This is a process.  Even through the transition you will still be figuring things out about your hair.  The more it grows the chances are you may have to change things up a bit.  Try not to fall into the product junkieism (as I have)!! There are so many things to try, so stick with what you know works until it doesn’t work anymore.  Most of all don’t give up to fall into hair typing and when you find out yours isn’t want you expect, be happy with what you have and learn how to take care of it.  There will be those who do not like it and that’s ok, you are doing it for you and not everyone else’s approval.

Organic Soap… Yes it’s Shea Moisture

You all may not remember but the first CurlBox I received which I believe was the March box, I recieved some great items. One item that really stood out to me was the Shea Moisture Red Bush & Sage Shea Butter Soap.

20120803-114646.jpg
Now this was my first time with this particular item from Shea Moisture. Prior to this I had only known of the hair products, so I had to put this organic soap to the test.

I have been using it for sometime now and I have to say Shea Moisture has done it again got me. They continue to deliver great products. It smells good, leaves my skin feeling clean, it lasts longer than most bars of soap in my opinion. Most of all I know my skin is getting all of its vitamins, minerals, and goodness. Yes…all natural ingredients! (I wish I could list all of them but that wrapper is no where to be found). Though, Shea Moistures has a very excellent reputation for all natural ingredients. So we know it’s real. Lol

Thanks to CurlBox for supplying me with the goods and thank you Shea Moisture for keeping me in love.

Love your Skin,
BkAphrodite
