How long have you been natural? 2 years and 11 months strong

Did you transition or do the Big Chop? I cut it all off baby!!! LOL

Why did you choose that route? My big chop story is crazy actually lol. I initially began transitioning with the 20121209-003032.jpgmethod of “growing an inch, cutting an inch” in mind. I was 3 months strong in my transition when I woke up one morning and tried to comb my hair. That comb broke in my head and I literally snapped! I was so over it that I was going to cut my hair myself, but my boyfriend stopped me and took me to a barber lol. I got it all chopped off and never looked back.

How long did you transition? 3 months

What inspired you to have natural hair?A perm gone wrong was my inspiration. A beautician gave me a perm and left it in too long, so I was left with a massive chemical burn that took up most of my crown area. My hair suffered massive breakage and an ugly scab to go with it. After that ordeal, I just couldn’t see myself damaging my hair any further with chemicals. So I decided to embrace my natural hair.

What has kept you motivated to remain natural? Throughout my journey, I’ve surrounded myself with people who embrace my natural hair, made curlfriends, watch other naturalistas hair journeys on YouTube, and experimented with different products and regimens that keep my hair journey exciting.

What are two(2) natural hair products that you just can’t live without? Why? 1) Shea Moisture’s Curl Milk-20121209-003036.jpgthis stuff moisturizes my hair beyond belief! I use it as a leave in and styler, so it’s like a 2 in 1product for me. 2) MyHoneyChild Honey Hair Mask-this deep conditioner is thee business! It moisturizes, detangles, and gives my hair sooo much shine.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair? In the warmer months, I enjoy wash n gos, for the colder months mostly twistouts and braidouts.

What do you love about your natural hair? It is so versatile and best of all, it’s mine!

What do you dislike about it? It takes forever to air dry, but I’ve learn to deal with it *side eye* lol

What tip(s) would you recommend to someone who wants to become natural, is transitioning, or needs advice about natural hair? Do your research and find what works for your hair. No one knows your hair better than you. Everyone goes through “Trial and Error” when trying to find products and regimens that’ll suit your hair’s needs. Utilize resources like google (my best friend lol), YouTube, and books to learn more about what could work for you. Also, never let anyone tell you our hair is “bad” or it doesn’t grow! Natural 20121209-003025.jpghair is beautiful, unique, and it grows to amazing lengths when properly cared for with a little bit of patience 😉 Embrace your natural self and love those curly tresses!

Don’t you just love Ashley’s curls? I know I do, I am going to have to use some of her tips.

Circus by Andrea’s Choice: Somersault(yellow) nail color

Buxom Lips: Big & Healthy lip polish

Juice Beauty: Green Apple SPF15 Moisturizer

NU.ME: HydroPunch hydrating conditioner

YES to cucumbers: On the go facial towelettes

I was most excited about the lip polish, being that I have been playing around with lip colors a tad; it looks rather fierce. Those facial towelettes; a lady can always use those. Maybe a review or two will be in the near future.

Shea Moisture Black Soap Mask and Moisturizer

Received these two products in my National Natural Hair Meetup Day winnings from the lovely folks over at Shea Moisture. I finally got a chance to try them.

20120601-122404.jpg

In using other masks I expected a thick consistency; this was not the case with this particular one. The consistency was lightweight and really watery. I cleansed my face with my Cerave cleanser followed by the application of the mask. It went on easy and came off easy. Thumbs up to Shea Moisture once again. I left the mask on for 15 minutes; after rinsing off the mask and patting dry as directed, I applied the balancing moisturizer. My face felt fresh and rejuvenated!

The container states that the mask is good for removing impurities from the skin before they can cause any trouble. It also absorbs any excessive oil in the skin and refines. All of this was indeed true.If you have troubled skin or like pampering yourself then this is a fun and easy way to do so.

In the May CurlBox (Birthday Edition) there was a product that I fell in love with. It was this…

Gold Label Coconut Care

Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, is made from organic, fresh coconuts in rural areas of the Philippines. The coconuts used are hand selected, and the pure coconut water from inside the coconut is used to extract the coconut oil using traditional methods.

20120429-204448.jpg

The amazing folks over at Tropical Traditions asked me to try some of their Virgin Coconut Oil and I can tell you it is a must try. I applied the coconut oil after washing to seal in my hair’s moisture. The coconut oil was very light on my hands as well as my hair. Unlike most coconut oils the consistency was really smooth which made it easy to handle and rub into my palms for application. My hair was left feeling moisturized and sealed. The best part about it was my hair did not feel greasy or heavy after applying. Awesome!

I can definitely see myself using this more often. Thanks to Tropical Traditions I now will be back to applying my coconut oil after washes as well as to keep my hair moisturized when dry. If you have not invested in a sealer for you hair, you should do so as soon as possible. Check out TropicalTraditions.com , for pricing and more information about their amazing Virgin Coconut Oil (which can also be used for cooking). They also have a variety of organic products so be sure to stop by.

Until next time…

Love,
BkAphrodite
