‘Tis the Season To Protective Style: Senegalese Twists Edition

Pretty Brown & Unconventionally Natural

wpid-img_20120715_153408

Oh how I LOVE to change up my hair!!! I’ve always been a natural who is a fan of braids, twists, locs, short hair, and yes wigs and weave (aka accessories)! It’s fun to change up my look whenever I want and not give a care about what other people have to say! I installed Senegalese twists for the very first time back in July right after I returned from the Essence Festival. You can find that post here. It was extremely hot wearing them during those warmer months, but now is the perfect time to do a protective style such as braids/twists. Below are some frequently asked questions.

FAQ’S:

  1. What kind of hair did you use? 100% Kanekalon braiding hair. They also have a brand called Expressions where you don’t have to use as many packs and you can use the “pulling method” to make the hair stretch.

Protect your lovely strands!

As the time nears closer to the peak of winter we are presented with harsh winds, colder temperatures and lots of layers.

We really can’t rock our belowed wash and go without fear of getting sick and we are presented with much drier hair. Now, is the time when we should be paying close attention to our strands. So why not add some layers to our hair as well! Protective styles help us to protect our hair from the harshness of the cold weather, retain length and have an overall healtheir set of strands. You may be saying in the back of your mind, “How the heck am I supposed to do that, I was just getting the hang of mastering my wash and go.” I promise you that you will be happy if you make the choice to do a couple protective styles. During this time doing your hair is pretty much a breeze and your hair is protected, which is the most important thing of all.

You can protect you strands by wearing our satin bonnet outside as a hat trying out various protective styles like twists, braids, wigs, weaves, extentions, and even wearing our twisted hair underneath our satin bonnets with a cute hat to add to our outfits.

I have opted to do various braided updos with twists for the past couple months as you can see a few pics of below.

If your interested you can also log on to healthyhairjourney.com for some ideas on styles or just search around on the internet for some protective style ideas. You can also stop by thegoodhairblog.com for “The Good Hair Blog Protective Style Challenge”. You can share your journey protecting your hair along with the 80+ women already started on the Challenge. You won’t want to miss this one.

SN: Don’t forget to keep your hair moisturized as well!!

How have you been protecting your strands? What protective styles will you be trying?

I Love My Hair – Now

This is extremely cute!!! I have to show this to as many young Queens as I can.

Nappy Head Chronicles

When my mom had me, it was the seventies and she was all about the Afrocentrism thing. Black Power, Nubian Pride, Mama Africa, yadda yadda yadda… She cut off her perm and grew an afro. She cut her best friend’s shoulder length hair into an afro too, much to the chagrin of her friend’s ultra conservative, ultra traditional West Indian mother. But not before she gave my six-year-old head a matching afro.

After that, I spent most of my time either telling people I wasn’t a boy , feeling sorry for myself because I didn’t have shiny, straight hair like my friends at school (all races, including black), or avoiding cameras at all costs. Pretty traumatic, actually… by kid standards.

Eventually, I did get a perm (against my mother’s will – a story for another day), but by that time, the damage had already been done. To this day I…
