Fun & Natural Hair in Central America

I recently took a trip to Central America and it was just amazing! I often heard many speak of the beauty of the Central American vacation spots but I had never been. After three plane rides for about 6 1/2 hours all together I had arrived to San Pedro, Belize.

20120822-140333.jpg

We boarded a small plane in Belize City which would take us to San Pedro where our hotel was located. San Pedro is one of the two small islands of Belize.

20120822-140357.jpg

As we soared across the lands of Belize and islands, it was one of the most beautiful experiences I have had in a long time. The blue waters and flourshing green lands.

I just couldn’t resist the beauty; it makes my heart melt just thinking back. I now understand the beauty everyone spoke about. This island is ridiculously beautiful.

Plus, it is home to the second largest barrier reef. It is a full package.

20120822-140414.jpg

The island of San Pedro is really small compared to the mainland, being that many of the people there road golf carts as cars. I thought this was super cool.

First day on the island and I was loving every moment, hammock living is so me; the breeze, the relaxation, the view.

The island is known for its barrier reef which protects the coral reef and precious sea animals. This caused lots of sea grass around the island and in the water. There was not much of the whole “white sandy beach” concept. None the less I was able to enjoy the water in small spots. I can’t complain. The beach scene was not really what I had expected but I understand that the beauty of the island has to be kept.

This was a totally amazing experience!

Oh and you can’t forget the yummy food!! OMG The national dish of Stew Chicken, Rice & Beans and cole slaw. My mouth is drooling thinking about it.

Me enjoying the Fun in the Sun

20120822-140545.jpgKeeping my hair up to par on this trip was a bit tricky. Plus, I kept dreaming of having that sun kissed Belizean hair, so I was trying to stay in the salt water and sun. I so wanted reddish brown tips; tt was just so beautiful. I couldn’t help it. I don’t know why I didn’t do a protective style. Though, next time I am totally prepared. To keep my hair fresh and clean after long hot days, or days of salt/chlorine water, I stuck by my trusty ole Shea Moisture and Vaitika Oil.

I also brought the regular conditioner, which is missing.

Towards the end of the trip we decided to take visit the mainland. Started the morning bright and early to head to the Belize City. We took a water taxi over and were greeted by our tour guides. Along the route we got to experience some breakfast tacos. They were soooooo delicious.

Once we made our way through the city after about 3 hours we headed for lunch and our tour of the Mayan Ruins and Ziplining. It was super amazing to me that we had to get on a hand cranked ferry to get across the river to the ruins. I loved it!!

20120822-140654.jpgIn Belize and Guatemala at the same time. The view was breathtaking from “El Castillo”(The Castle), which is the main Mayan ruin of Xunantunich(Stone Woman).

The ruin got its name when a man claimed to have seen a woman in the window of “El Castillo”, when he went to the window the lady had disappeared. She was the stone woman.

The tour was beautiful but it was just too darn hot. I was struggling going through the tour. Lol. In my mind I kept trying to figure out how the Mayans survived the heat in that space. If you can tell in the picture I was sweating profusely. The Sun Gods were in full effect around that place, Just remember if your ever in Belize on a tour be prepared for the wrath of the heat.

20120822-140817.jpg

You know I came prepared thanks to my Summer CurlBox. “There ain’t no bugs on me, there ain’t no bugs on me, there may be bugs on some of you mugs, but there ain’t no bugs on me”;All “Bugs OFF” 🙂

We came to out final spot in the rain forest for ziplining, which was SO MUCH FUN. Once again hot as heck. I must have lost about 50 lbs with all the walking and sweating. Lol The heat was definitely turned all the way up.

20120822-140827.jpg

Yummy Rum Punch! I think I might need to head back to Belize City! Lol

20120822-140857.jpg

Wrapping up the day in Belize City after our tour on the water taxi. Tell me this isn’t Beauty!!

20120822-140906.jpg

All good things come to and end, but it was joyous none the less. Rewind!! That wasn’t it so our flight got delayed coming back to New York, oh then it was cancelled until the next day. So guess who got to stay and extra day in Belize…….I did! It was a little nerve wrecking because I had anticipated heading to Miami for a bit and back home to NY; oviously God had other plans for me to enjoy. I would like to thank my Airline for allowing me to stay an extra night.

I also took the time to just add a couple other pics that I took while on my trip for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy

Sealing Moisture into Your Hair

I did some research on the proper way natural hair should be moisturized and put it to the test. My hair felt soft and super moisturized. Check out the post I found by Nikisha of Urban Bush Babes.

Hi ladies, I wanted to give a quick run through for those who don’t know how to seal their hair, because there is a right way and a wrong way.

Step 1.While hair is freshly cleansed and still wet apply a leave-in conditioner and/or moisturizing cream. Make sure that the leave-in conditioner and moisturizing cream have “water” as an ingredient. The water helps with hairs moisture.

Step 2. Last step apply a coat of oils or butters to your ends and all over your hair if you prefer. This will help seal in the moisture from the leave-in creams and conditioners. This aids in length retention because moisturized hair prevents breakage.

***If you don’t apply your oils or butters as your last step then you will block out the moisture from the leave-in cream and conditioner. Just think about putting a coat of oil on your strands and then trying to put a cream on top, it won’t penetrate. So make sure to follow these steps in exact order . Cream and/or leave-in conditioner first and oils or butters last . Stay away from creams and oils that contain mineral oil and petroleum.

Colour Me Beautiful!! Why Yes!

Exciting news guys!! If you follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram you may have already heard that I was the winner of the Colour Me Beautiful Contest by WonderCurl. I admit I kinda gave up after a while and didn’t think I’d win, but I did. I was super excited! Go Me! Well here’s a recap of the day:

Wednesday before my travels I met up with the lovely Scarlett of WonderCurl to get fitted for some threads for the shoot. We stopped in at Ragz to Riches located in New Jersey; with numerous outfits for a wide variety of diva styles, it was fashion galore.

The weekend I traveled from NYC to DC, patiently awaiting my day to come. Saturday arrived and I was on my way to Capitol Heights, MD. There I stopped in at Fabulocs Salon.

I was greeted by the lovely Lorin Michele of LocXurious, where she assessed my hair and referred me to one of the best washers in the salon, Danielle. She took some before pics of my hair and we went on to the wash station. Boy, when I tell you she hooked my hair up with that wash. She massaged my scalped and ensured it was fresh and clean.

That was just the beginning! Followed by my massage filled wash, I then sat in the hot seat. Fierceness was on its way! Lorin applied all of the WonderCurl line to my hair, and she added some mini flat twists to one side and chunky flat twists to the other.

Once she was done I sat under the dryer for a while, and waited to head to the shoot. I met with Holly of MakeUpbyHolly who prepped my face and added that extra umph to my face. My makeup was on point!

20120822-141012.jpg

I was receiving that STAR treatment baby. Hair & Makeup!!

I was all glammed up and now it was time for the shoot by Cipriana of Soulfully Speaking. I got dressed and was feeling EXTRA fierce. ” Oh you fancy huh, nails done, hair done, everything did, Oh you fancy huh”

Yes, I didn’t forget you all. I’ve got a sneak peek of the shoot. 😉

CurlyNikki, Tracee Ellis Ross & a ton of Curl girls

I had the privilege of joining what felt like millions of naturals, well known naturalista  CurlyNikki, and actress Tracee Ellis Ross at the Optimum Salon Haircare event last night. Let me just say the event was beautiful. CurlyNikki has done it again; another event with excellent an turn out.

As the space at 404 NYC was adorned with big fros and mini fros, naturals had the chance to mix and mingle with each other and talk hair, alongside their complimentary drinks. We also got the chance to learn more about the Optimum 6 in 1 miracle oil. Yes, a naturalistas dream products and seeing more than one other person in a room full of people with hair like theirs.

Tressumé: Anita

Name: Anita

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

I found this young lady on Instagram and she has been a fellow Instagrammer for quite some time. Time and time again I see her post pictures of her amazing transition. If I were a longer term transitioner I’d definitely have to go to her for tips. All of her transition styles come out super! Check out her Tressumé.

How long have you been natural?
I am not fully natural at this time.

Did you transition or do the Big Chop?
I am a transitioner.
Why did you choose that route?
I chose to transition for two reason… I believe I do not look good with short hair. Had it once (not on purpose…scissor happy stylist) and vowed never again.  Second reason, my husband had one request as he got used to my new hair.  Do not cut off all of your hair, is what he requested. How long have you been transitioning?I have been transitioning now for 12 months (August 2011 last relaxer).  I plan to transition anywhere between 18 months and 24 months.

What inspired you to have natural hair?
I have had a relaxer in my hair since I was 6 years old.  My mom doesn’t need a relaxer and did not know what to do with all of this thick kinky hair.  I have never seen my natural hair and became curious after seeing so many beautiful naturals.  Even though my relaxed hair grew long it always seemed to stop growing at a certain point and I experienced thinning at the temples.  I also have a very sensitive scalp and the relaxer gave me severe burns and I couldn’t take it anymore.

What has kept you motivated to remain natural?
As my new curls started coming in at first I began feeling like I needed to do something with this thick hair, but after learning so much about how to take care of it and what products to use it became something I began to get excited about.  The longer it got the more I wanted to try new transitioning styles to see what I could do with it next.  I can’t keep one style in (braids) too long because I begin to miss my curls.

What are two(2) natural hair products that you just can’t live without? Why?
This is really hard to come up with only two because I have become a product junkie.  If I had to go with any two, it would be Shea butter mixture (Shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, & vitamin E oil) and Kinky Curly Knot Today.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?
My favorite hair style is two strand twist out with perm rods on the relaxed ends.  This style is great to work out with and if when it gets old it’s great to pull up into a curly puff.  It really blends the two textures.
What do you love about your natural hair?Since I am not fully natural, I have to say I love the thickness of my hair and my curls.  I love when it’s wet and just fingering through to look at how I have different textures throughout.

What do you dislike about it?
Currently, I can’t say I dislike anything about it.  I can say however, I dislike the relaxed ends that I just can’t part with at the moment.

What tip(s) would you recommend to someone who wants to become natural, is transitioning, or needs advice about natural hair?
Patience, patience, patience.  This is a process.  Even through the transition you will still be figuring things out about your hair.  The more it grows the chances are you may have to change things up a bit.  Try not to fall into the product junkieism (as I have)!! There are so many things to try, so stick with what you know works until it doesn’t work anymore.  Most of all don’t give up to fall into hair typing and when you find out yours isn’t want you expect, be happy with what you have and learn how to take care of it.  There will be those who do not like it and that’s ok, you are doing it for you and not everyone else’s approval.

Sister Act on Broadway

I first would like to say Thank You to the amazing Imani of TribeCalledCurl for allowing me to be apart of such an amazing National Natural Hair Meetup Day event. I would also like to thank Shea Moisture for giving me the opportunity to win such an amazing prize of goodies.

As most of you know I won a couple of goodies on National Natural Hair Meetup Day. One of those prizes gave me the opportunity to see the amazing broadway show Sister Act and I absolutely loved it.

When your on broadway it’s just so much different. The lights, the action and most of all those amazing musicals. You gotta love NYC!

Well let me get on to tell you how AMAZING Sister Act was. It was a fun filled, and very comedic show starring the beautiful Raven- Symone and … among a cast many other talented actors and singers. When I tell you those people can sing…they can SANG. I loved every minute of it. Oh, and I loved that natural hair she was rocking during the show. Sadly, the show is only around for a short time. So if you haven’t seen it try your best to get some tickets fast. It’s a must see.

This experience was a great way to bring my summer days to an end. The best part of it all was I got to meet Raven-Symone. She was super sweet and has a beautiful spirit.

PS I’m hoping she stops by Aphrodite Kinks. 🙂

Was supposed to bring a curlfriend, but as you can see I had to bring a permed friend.
